From Vision to Reality
There are moments in life when you spend so much time planning, preparing, fundraising, worrying, and hoping that it's hard to imagine the day will actually arrive.
For months, nearly every Heartsmith update has revolved around building this summer program. We applied for grants, hosted fundraisers, recruited volunteers, gathered supplies, wrote lesson plans, and crossed our fingers that somehow it would all come together.
And then, almost without warning, the first day arrived.
The kids showed up.
The journals came out. The ducks were fed. Seeds were planted. New friendships began to form. The land, came alive.
It became a classroom.
A playground.
A place of discovery.
A place filled with laughter.
One of the things that has struck me most during this first week is how naturally children connect with the world around them when given the opportunity. They notice things adults often walk right past. A bug hidden in the grass. An unusual insect on a leaf. A feather along the trail. They ask questions that don't always have simple answers and remind us that curiosity is one of the greatest gifts we possess.
The daily rhythm we've worked so hard to create is beginning to take shape. We gather for circle time, reflect in our journals, explore new topics, and spend our afternoons learning through hands-on experiences in nature.
Perhaps most importantly, we're watching confidence grow.
Children who were quiet on the first day are beginning to share their ideas. Kids who arrived as strangers are already making friends. Small acts of kindness and teamwork appear throughout the day in ways that can never be fully captured in a lesson plan.
This week also marks the beginning of several exciting guest visits. We're thrilled to welcome Steve's Bees, along with a representative from the Pennsylvania Game Commission, and Penn State Master Gardener, Heather Hilyer Gray. They are helping bring additional knowledge, experience, and inspiration to the program.
As exciting as these activities are, they also serve as a reminder that none of this happened alone.
Every child attending this program is here because an entire community showed up.
The Walmart Spark Good Grant helped us move from planning into action. Families supported our fundraising efforts. Community members donated supplies. Volunteers stepped forward. Local organizations shared resources and expertise. Neighbors offered encouragement, advice, and helping hands.
Every piece mattered.
Every contribution became part of something larger.
Heartsmith has always had a vision—a dream of creating a place where people could reconnect with nature, with community, and with themselves.
Today, that vision sounds like laughter echoing across the property.
It looks like muddy boots and children proudly carrying eggs from the duck coop.
It looks like friendships forming around a table.
And it feels like gratitude.
As we move into the second week of the program, we're excited for all that's still to come. More learning, more adventures, more growth, and undoubtedly more unexpected moments of wonder.
Thank you to everyone who has helped make this possible.
We can't wait to see what the rest of the summer brings.
